About Kingfisher Composting
Making environmental education engaging, tangible, and impactful for the next generation.
Our Mission
Kingfisher Composting exists to make sustainability accessible and educational. We believe that when people—especially young people—see the composting process firsthand, it transforms how they think about waste, resources, and their role in the environment.
Our Story
Founded at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Kingfisher started with a simple idea: composting should be easy to understand and easy to do. What began as a student project grew into a two-pillar organization—pairing hands-on school education with a bike-powered curbside pickup service that serves households across Champaign-Urbana.
